Russia and Ukraine struck each other overnight into Sunday, August 16, 2026. Ukrainian authorities reported one person killed and seven injured, while Moscow’s mayor said 600 drones were sent toward the Russian capital.
DR reports that a woman was killed and six people injured in an attack on Kryvyj Rih, in the central Dnipropetrovsk region. The figures come from the region’s governor. The city, which is President Volodymyr Zelensky’s hometown, was hit by both missiles and drones.
Oleksandr Vilkul, head of the city’s military administration, posted the account overnight on the messaging service Telegram. He warned that further attacks could follow, and said two industrial sites in the city had been hit. In the capital, Kyiv, the military administration warned that ballistic missiles were heading toward the city.
Kyiv’s mayor, Vitalij Klytjko, then reported explosions and urged residents to stay in shelters, according to DR. One person was injured in the strike on Kyiv. Ukrainian authorities provided the casualty figures for both cities.
Drones reported over Moscow
Moscow mayor Sergej Sobjanin wrote on Sunday morning that 600 drones had been directed at the Russian capital during the night. He posted the claim on the state-run Russian messaging service Max. Three people were injured, per Sobjanin, and emergency crews were sent to sites where drone debris had fallen.
Russian and Ukrainian media, including Astra and the Kyiv Independent, reported that Ukraine had again struck warehouses belonging to the Russian e-commerce company Wildberries. DR notes that this has not been officially confirmed. The Kyiv Independent reported that Ukrainian forces targeted a warehouse in Moscow Oblast and that a fire broke out in Koledino, near Moscow.
Izvestia reported that a Wildberries warehouse in Podolsk caught fire after being hit by a drone. The outlet cited Moscow region governor Andrey Vorobyov, who said employees had been taken to shelter and that no one was injured. The accounts differ, with DR describing the reports as unconfirmed.
Ukraine attacked the company several times in July, accusing it of using its warehouse facilities to supply the military with equipment, DR reports. The Kremlin has rejected that claim. A photo distributed by Reuters showed smoke and flames rising from Wildberries facilities in Bashkortostan after a strike on August 13.
Reuters reported on August 7 that Ukrainian strikes had repeatedly hit Wildberries facilities across several Russian regions in recent weeks. The outlet described the strikes as pressure on a major logistics network. That places the reported overnight attack within a continuing campaign rather than an isolated incident.
Denmark has previously signaled readiness to take part in peacekeeping efforts in Ukraine.
