Top Danish Business Leader Busted Twice for DUI

The deputy director of Denmark’s largest business organization faces legal charges after being caught driving under the influence twice within five hours. The case has prompted official reprimands but limited professional consequences.

Two DUI Arrests Within Hours

Thomas Bustrup, deputy director of the Confederation of Danish Industry (DI), was stopped by police twice in one day this past summer for suspected drunk driving. According to the indictment, obtained by TV 2 and TV 2 Bornholm, the first stop happened on June 9 at around 4:05 p.m. in Rønne on Bornholm, where his blood alcohol level exceeded Denmark’s legal limit of 0.5.

Approximately four and a half hours later, Bustrup was stopped again, this time near Kastrup around 8:35 p.m. The indictment states that his blood alcohol level was again above the legal threshold, though the exact level was not disclosed.

The prosecutor now seeks to revoke Bustrup’s driver’s license unconditionally. The case underscores how seriously Danish authorities regard repeated drunk driving offenses.

Company Response and Disciplinary Action

Bustrup serves as deputy CEO for operations and international affairs at the Confederation of Danish Industry. After the charges were made public, DI’s CEO Lars Sandahl Sørensen confirmed that Bustrup had received the strongest possible internal reprimand from the organization.

Even though DI condemned the incidents, the organization indicated that Bustrup would continue in his position. DI also emphasized that similar actions in the future would be entirely incompatible with employment at the organization.

Meanwhile, Bustrup declined further comment on the ongoing legal process. The company’s official response referred only to a previously released statement addressing the case.

Legal Consequences and Public Reaction

Court proceedings are scheduled to take place on December 8 at the court in Bornholm. Before the trial has even begun, Bustrup has already pleaded guilty to the charges.

He has publicly accepted the court’s future ruling and said that several steps have been taken to prevent a repeat of the incident. These steps have reportedly included personal counseling and professional guidance, though details have not been disclosed.

The incident has been widely covered, including in reports such as Danish vice director charged with drunk driving. The case reflects ongoing public concern about executives’ accountability when facing personal misconduct allegations.

Strict Drunk Driving Laws in Denmark

Denmark enforces a blood alcohol limit of 0.5 promille. However, drivers can still face penalties with a lower level if police determine that alcohol has impaired their ability to drive safely.

Earlier this year, the government made the rules even stricter for new drivers holding a license for less than three years. Their legal limit is now 0.2.

These changes reflect a broader effort to reduce road accidents related to alcohol consumption, a campaign strongly supported by law enforcement and transportation safety organizations.

Professional Impact

Despite the seriousness of the charges, DI has treated the case as a private legal matter rather than grounds for dismissal. According to the organization, Bustrup’s conduct does not currently affect the company’s leadership stability.

Still, the incident raises ethical questions about the role of senior executives in maintaining public trust. In a country known for its strong workplace integrity standards, repeated DUI offenses by a top business figure have drawn significant public scrutiny and disappointment.

As a result, this case could serve as a reference point for how similar incidents involving high-profile executives are handled in Denmark going forward.
