Young Danes are turning political campaign posters into personal memorabilia as local candidates become social media personalities. In Esbjerg, a 19-year-old proudly displays a signed poster of a city council member from the Danish People’s Party on her bedroom door.
Teen Bedroom Decor Goes Political
After the local elections in Esbjerg, most campaign posters ended up in storage or recycling bins. But some have found a second life on teenage bedroom walls. Several young Danes reached out to a 24-year-old candidate from the Danish People’s Party, Mads Egelund Larsen, asking if they could have one of his posters.
During the campaign, Larsen noticed that more people recognized him from TikTok than from traditional media. Because of that, he invited followers to stop by the Esbjerg Main Library to pick up signed posters earlier this week. For the new city council member, the sudden attention felt both surprising and amusing, especially since he still considers himself just an ordinary young guy from town.
Young Voters Bring Campaign Posters Home
One of those who showed up was 19-year-old Nicoline Mikkelsen from Vester Nebel. She spotted the giveaway on social media and decided to go, mostly out of curiosity. Her plan wasn’t to collect a fan item, but she liked the idea of mixing humor with politics. Now, the signed poster of the 24-year-old politician decorates her bedroom door, much like a pop star or movie idol photo might.
According to her, the interest is not about attraction but about political curiosity. She says it reminds her of current debates and gives her a fun way to talk about them with friends.
Interestingly, Nicoline isn’t alone. Sixteen-year-old Nicklas Nielsen, a student at Kjærgaard Agricultural School near Bramming, also took one of the posters. For him, it’s more about joining a trend. He says it looks nice on his wall and that many of his peers are doing the same.
Social Media Turns Politicians Into Pop Icons
Media researcher Mads Kæmsgaard Eberholst from Roskilde University sees this as part of a growing shift in how young Danes view politics. Today’s politicians are active on the same platforms that young people use daily. Because of that, they feel more accessible, almost like influencers who mix personal stories with political messages.
Eberholst explains that many younger voters connect more with politicians’ online personalities than with party programs. They see them as familiar faces from TikTok and Instagram, which makes campaign posters feel like collectible items. This may also tie into broader election trends, such as how Danish local elections are seeing large numbers of undecided young voters.
From TikTok to the City Council
Larsen’s approach reflects a wider tendency among newer politicians to use humor and personal branding instead of traditional speeches and posters. He is following a pattern set by well-known figures like Liberal Alliance leader Alex Vanopslagh, whose posters were traded online after the 2022 general election.
These exchanges blur the line between politics and pop culture. Some see them as proof that young people are more politically engaged, while others question whether posters as decor really translate into deeper participation.
Still, the combination of social media and creative outreach is making local debates more visible. Many young Danes say that seeing politicians engage like influencers has made them more curious about city council issues, even if they don’t yet have firm political opinions.
At the same time, this trend highlights how online platforms shape modern democracy in Denmark. Politicians gain exposure, and followers feel part of the process in a new, interactive way.
As campaign posters turn into collectibles and social media stardom continues to grow, local politics may never look quite the same again.
