Election Night

Uncertainty surrounds a rumored deal between Denmark’s left-wing parties before the Copenhagen municipal election. If the pact falls apart, election night could end in open conflict.

Tension Builds Ahead of the Copenhagen Vote

The battle for power in Copenhagen looks set to become one of the biggest dramas of Denmark’s upcoming local elections. According to several sources, talk of a secret deal between the city’s two main left-wing parties, the Red-Green Alliance (Enhedslisten) and the Socialist People’s Party (SF), has captured attention both inside City Hall and at Christiansborg.

The alleged arrangement concerns how the two parties would share power if they succeed in pushing the Social Democrats out of City Hall after more than a century of dominance. Although nothing has been put in writing, discussions reportedly took place between the two top candidates about who would claim the mayor’s chain should they form a majority with the Alternative Party.

Different Views Within the Alliance

So far, both parties deny that such a power-sharing deal exists, yet their explanations raise more questions than answers. Inside Enhedslisten, the understanding is clear: the largest party on the left should automatically take the post of Lord Mayor if the three parties together secure the 28 mandates required for a majority in Copenhagen. Considering current polls, that would give Enhedslisten the lead.

SF, on the other hand, interprets matters differently. Party insiders believe the job should go to whoever can build the broadest coalition, not necessarily the largest party. This thinking could involve support from center-right parties in an effort to form a practical working majority. Because of that, SF might appear a more acceptable partner for some of the city’s more conservative factions, giving them a strategic edge.

Internal Conflicts Could Spread

The conflict over Copenhagen’s potential “red alliance” could easily ripple into national politics. Cooperation between SF and Enhedslisten remains vital across Denmark, but bitter feelings over who gets the mayor’s seat in Copenhagen might disrupt their alliance in other municipalities.

If Enhedslisten wins the most votes and still decides to hand the position to SF as a compromise, some members fear this could dampen support for SF elsewhere. On the other hand, if the parties refuse to compromise at all, they risk paralyzing the new city administration before it even begins its work.

Social Democrats Call It a “Toilet Deal”

Adding fuel to the fire, the Social Democrats have labeled the rumored pact a “toilet deal.” Senior figures within the party, including Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard, have used the term repeatedly on social media while warning that a vote for SF may effectively make Enhedslisten the new mayor.

These claims have quickly become part of the campaign narrative. The Social Democrats aim to convince undecided or centrist voters that only they can prevent Copenhagen from turning into what they call a “deep red” power center. The attacks also signal to right-leaning parties that supporting the Social Democrats might be a way to maintain political stability.

Despite constant denials from both SF and Enhedslisten, the existence of the supposed deal has become a major story in the final days before voting. Many observers see it as a test of whether Denmark’s left-wing parties can balance ambition with cooperation or whether personal rivalries will overshadow their shared political goals.

What Happens Next

With the outcome still uncertain, everything hinges on the election night negotiations. If the three left-wing parties together form a majority, the question of who takes charge will decide not only the direction of Copenhagen but could also shape future cooperation on the Danish left.

In the end, both SF and Enhedslisten seem determined to end the Social Democrats’ long reign. The only question is whether they can stay united long enough to make that happen.
