Viggo Mortensen Joins US Congress Members in Greenland

Four US Congress members visited Greenland for three days, concluding with an unexpected press conference appearance by Danish-American actor Viggo Mortensen. The delegation emphasized repairing trust eroded by President Trump’s earlier proposals to purchase the territory, while Mortensen wore a pin reading “Greenland is not for sale.”

The press conference in downtown Nuuk took an unusual turn when the doors opened to reveal not just American politicians, but Hollywood actor Viggo Mortensen. The Danish-American star of The Lord of the Rings trilogy sat down with a yellow coffee cup, drawing more attention than the congressional delegation itself. Mortensen wore a pin with the message “Greenland is not for sale” on his jacket, a clear statement amid ongoing debates about American interest in the Arctic territory.

Congressional Visit Aims to Rebuild Trust

The three-day visit brought together four American politicians from both major parties to assess the situation in Greenland firsthand. Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski from Alaska led the delegation, which included meetings with Greenland’s government leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen and a visit to Pittufik military base. The group represented a bipartisan effort to counter President Trump’s approach to Greenland.

Repairing Damaged Relations

Senator Murkowski delivered pointed comments about the state of US-Greenland relations during the press conference. She noted that decades of trust built since World War II had eroded with just a few sentences, referring to Trump’s repeated proposals to purchase Greenland. The senator emphasized the need to work toward restoring that trust and viewing Greenland as an ally rather than an asset to control.

The delegation had previously made headlines when visiting Copenhagen in January. During that stop, Murkowski stressed the importance of respecting Greenland’s sovereignty. Her continued engagement demonstrates a sustained effort by some members of Congress to establish diplomatic relations separate from the Trump administration’s agenda.

Limited Power to Counter Presidential Action

Rasmus Søndergaard, a senior researcher at the Danish Institute for International Studies, provided analysis of what the delegation could realistically accomplish. He explained that the visit served primarily as a symbolic gesture to show Greenland that not all American politicians support Trump’s approach. In the short term, Congress has limited ability to prevent presidential action regarding Greenland.

However, Congress retains significant power over long-term initiatives. Any purchase offer would require congressional approval for funding. A treaty to incorporate Greenland into the United States would need a two-thirds Senate majority. These constitutional requirements give Congress substantial leverage over any formal attempts to change Greenland’s status.

The Mortensen Factor

Viggo Mortensen’s presence added an unexpected dimension to the political visit. The actor has Danish-American citizenship and has previously criticized Trump in a letter to Danish newspaper Sjællandske. In that letter, he wrote that Trump should not receive even a square inch of Greenland.

An Advocate Seeking Understanding

Mortensen arrived in Nuuk on the same flight as some delegation members. A Danish reporter encountered him at the airport, where the actor expressed his desire to gain better understanding of how the political situation affects Greenlanders. He declined formal interview requests but his attendance at the press conference sent a clear message about his stance.

The film star’s involvement reflects growing international attention on Greenland’s future. His celebrity status brought additional media focus to what might otherwise have been a routine diplomatic visit. Even the senators approached Mortensen after the press conference to introduce themselves.

Entertainment Meets Diplomacy

The unusual combination of Hollywood and congressional politics created memorable optics for the Greenland visit. Mortensen sat quietly during the proceedings, his yellow coffee cup replacing the sword his character Aragorn wielded in The Lord of the Rings films. The moment illustrated how cultural figures increasingly participate in geopolitical discussions.

Meanwhile, the delegation focused on substantive discussions with Greenlandic officials. They gathered information about local perspectives on American military presence and economic development. These conversations will inform their work back in Washington as they challenge what Søndergaard called misinformation circulating in the United States about Greenland.

What Congress Can Accomplish

The delegation departed Nuuk with limited concrete outcomes but important symbolic achievements. Their visit demonstrated that significant portions of the American political establishment reject Trump’s transactional approach to Greenland. The trip functioned partly as an apology on behalf of the president, according to analysis from Danish foreign policy experts.

Bringing Greenlandic Voices to Washington

Søndergaard noted that the Congress members can now use their firsthand experience in legislative debates. They heard directly from Greenland’s government that the territory is not for sale. This clear message from Nuuk provides ammunition against claims that Greenland might welcome American acquisition. The visitors can share authentic Greenlandic perspectives with colleagues who have never visited the Arctic.

The delegation also gathered intelligence during their military base visit. Pittufik, formerly known as Thule Air Base, represents a crucial American strategic asset in the Arctic. Understanding the current security arrangement helps Congress members evaluate future defense appropriations and Arctic policy.

Marking Opposition to Presidential Plans

The visit served notice that congressional resistance exists to any unilateral presidential action regarding Greenland. This bipartisan coalition spans from Alaska Republicans to mainland Democrats. Their presence in Nuuk signaled to both Greenlandic leaders and the White House that Congress intends to exercise its constitutional role in foreign policy.

Despite that opposition, practical constraints remain. As Søndergaard explained, Congress cannot easily prevent short-term presidential initiatives that do not require funding or treaties. The diplomatic landscape continues evolving as Trump pursues his vision for expanded American presence in the Arctic region.
