Tragic Crash on Icy Danish Highway Kills Officer

A police officer died and another was seriously injured after a truck struck their vehicle while they were responding to an earlier accident on the E45 Sønderjyske Motorvej near Aabenraa early Thursday morning. The incident occurred during icy conditions that had already caused a multi-vehicle crash on the highway.

Initial Accident Prompts Police Response

The Syd- og Sønderjyllands Politi received a report at 1:34 a.m. about a traffic accident on the Sønderjyske Motorvej near Aabenraa caused by slippery road conditions. Multiple vehicles were involved in the initial crash, which occurred in the southbound lanes of the major highway connecting northern and southern Denmark.

According to earlier reports, four vehicles were involved in the first collision. Two of the cars ended up on their roofs, and two people sustained injuries of undetermined severity. The accident forced authorities to close sections of the motorway to manage the scene and assist those involved.

Tragedy Strikes Responding Officers

Shortly after the initial accident, a second collision occurred at the same location. A truck struck a police vehicle that had arrived at the scene to handle the earlier crash. The impact proved fatal for one police officer, while another sustained serious injuries and was taken to a hospital.

The Syd- og Sønderjyllands Politi confirmed the death in a press release issued Thursday morning. Authorities have notified the families of both officers involved in the incident. The police department has not released additional information about the circumstances surrounding the truck collision or the identities of the officers.

Motorway Remains Closed for Investigation

The E45 Sønderjyske Motorvej is completely blocked in the southbound direction between exit 71 Aabenraa and exit 72 Aabenraa Syd. The road closure affects one of Denmark’s primary north-south transport routes, particularly important for those driving in Denmark through the southern regions.

Vejdirektoratet reported that the motorway is expected to reopen later in the morning. Technical investigations are currently underway at the accident site to determine exactly what happened and why the truck collided with the police vehicle.

Dangerous Conditions on Danish Roads

The accidents highlight the hazards emergency responders face when attending incidents on busy highways, especially during adverse weather conditions. Icy roads created the initial accident scene, which then became the location of the fatal collision involving police officers.

In fact, Denmark’s winter road conditions can change rapidly, creating unexpected dangers for both regular motorists and emergency personnel. The combination of multiple accidents at one location demonstrates how quickly situations can escalate on major motorways.

Investigation Continues

Authorities continue to examine both accident scenes to understand the full sequence of events. The investigation will likely focus on road conditions, visibility, traffic management at the initial accident site, and the truck driver’s actions leading up to the fatal collision.

Meanwhile, the northbound lanes near exit 69 had also experienced closures earlier due to the overturned vehicles from the first accident. Traffic was being rerouted as emergency crews worked to clear the scene and assist injured parties.

The loss of a police officer in the line of duty represents a significant tragedy for the local police force and the broader community. As a result, support systems for fellow officers and the family of the deceased are being activated according to standard protocols for such incidents.

The incident serves as a somber reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face daily while protecting public safety. Emergency responders regularly put themselves in harm’s way at accident scenes on highways where traffic continues to flow and conditions remain unpredictable.
