Rooftop Snow Destroys Cars and Threatens Lives

Falling snow from rooftops is damaging cars and threatening pedestrians across Eastern Jutland as heavy snowfall continues to blanket Denmark. Residents are warning each other on social media after a car windshield was completely destroyed in Randers and a large snow mass nearly hit pedestrians in Aarhus.

Snow Crashes Down on Aarhus Street

The dangers of accumulated rooftop snow became frighteningly real for Maria G. Lauridsen on Wednesday afternoon. She was sitting in her apartment in the Frederiksbjerg district of Aarhus when a loud crash startled her. Looking out her window, she saw a massive pile of snow had fallen from the roof directly onto the sidewalk below.

The snow landed right in front of her building entrance. Fortunately, no one was walking there at that moment. She rushed outside to inspect the damage and discovered that the heavy snow had torn an electrical cable loose from the brickwork as it fell.

Facebook Warning Goes Out

Maria immediately posted a warning in the local Facebook group “Alle os fra Frederiksbjerg.” She urged neighbors to watch out for falling snow while walking in the city. She noted that she had nearly been hit by falling snow herself the day before during a walk.

The incident prompted her to contact her landlord right away. Per Pedersen, one of the building owners, confirmed he received the message and that they would look into the situation immediately.

Helmet Needed for City Walks

The experience left Maria shaken by how dangerous a simple walk through town has become. She joked that pedestrians might need to wear bicycle helmets when going outside. The heavy snow continues to pose risks throughout the city as temperatures fluctuate and rooftop accumulations become unstable.

Smashed Windshield in Randers

The problem extends beyond Aarhus. On Tuesday afternoon, Oliver Kæseler from Randers discovered his parked car on Danmarksgade had been hit by falling snow. When he approached his vehicle, he initially thought he could simply scrape away some snow.

Total Destruction of Car Window

Getting closer, Oliver realized the windshield was completely shattered. The force of the snow falling from the building above had destroyed the glass entirely. He never got to drive anywhere that day.

While photographing the damage for his insurance claim, he noticed another car further down the street was about to suffer the same fate. He quickly posted a warning on Facebook to alert other residents about the danger of parking near buildings with snow-covered roofs.

Insurance Claims Rising

LB Forsikring reports a significant increase in damage claims related to winter weather. The insurance company emphasizes that property owners bear responsibility for clearing snow from roofs to prevent it from causing damage when it falls. This applies to apartment buildings as well as single-family homes.

Widespread Winter Chaos Continues

The snow has fallen heavily across Denmark in recent days. Municipal winter services have been operating around the clock to keep roads passable. Meanwhile, the white blanket covering rooftops throughout the region has created a hidden danger for anyone below.

Weather Warnings Remain in Effect

Weather forecasts indicate more snow is on the way across most of Denmark. DMI has issued warnings for snowstorms and heavy snow in the coming days. This means the risks from falling rooftop snow will likely continue or even worsen before conditions improve.

Vejdirektoratet urges drivers to adjust their speed to match road conditions. Police have already issued fines to motorists driving without proper winter tires during the current cold weather conditions. The focus remains on preventing accidents as winter maintains its grip on the country.

Age Differences in Winter Preparation

A recent survey from LB Forsikring reveals generational differences in how Danes prepare their vehicles for winter conditions. Among drivers under 35, about 15 percent admit they sometimes drive without fully removing snow and ice from windows and roofs. Only 4 percent of drivers over 65 make the same admission.

The survey of 1,392 members found that 70 percent spend less than five minutes manually preparing their cars in winter. This rush to get on the road may contribute to dangerous situations when snow slides off vehicles during travel.

Legal Responsibilities and Safety Advice

Danish traffic law requires drivers to maintain clear visibility through all windows, mirrors, lights, and license plates. Vehicles must also have snow removed from the roof before driving. Police can issue fines or even conditional license suspension for violations.

Property Owner Obligations

Building owners face similar responsibilities regarding rooftop snow. They must ensure accumulated snow does not pose a danger to pedestrians or property below. When snow falls and causes damage, the property owner may be held liable if they failed to take reasonable precautions.

Insurance experts note that homeowners should document conditions and take action when snow accumulation becomes significant. This protects both the public and the property owner from potential liability issues.

Practical Winter Safety Tips

LB Forsikring recommends keeping a snow shovel, reflective vest, and floor mats in the car during winter months. Drivers should use windshield washer fluid rated to negative 21 degrees Celsius to prevent freezing. Most importantly, all snow should be removed from the entire vehicle before driving.

Maiken Sjöberg Russ from LB Forsikring warns that large amounts of snow on car roofs can be dangerous for other road users. The same principle applies to building roofs. As temperatures fluctuate, the snow becomes heavier and more likely to slide off suddenly.
