Residents Revolt Over Controversial Bus Route Cuts

More than 1,000 residents have protested planned cuts to a key East Jutland bus route, which could remove 15 stops to save only a few minutes of travel time.

Public outcry over Midttrafik’s route changes

The regional bus company Midttrafik has triggered strong opposition after proposing major changes to Route 100, which runs between Odder, Aarhus, and Hornslet. The plan would remove 15 bus stops, mostly in and around Odder, Beder, and Malling, to reduce travel time by only five or six minutes.

Between January 5 and January 18, Midttrafik received over 1,000 public responses during the official hearing period. Nearly half came from citizens in Odder alone, while hundreds more were submitted from Beder and Malling. Many residents argue that the changes would weaken local public transport and hurt daily commuters who rely on the route to reach jobs, schools, and services.

Local frustration focused in Odder and nearby towns

Odder residents have been particularly vocal because 13 of the 15 stops marked for closure are in their municipality or nearby communities. In total, 507 responses were filed from Odder, 238 from Beder, and 208 from Malling. The strong participation rate reflects deep concern over the potential loss of accessible transport in smaller urban areas.

Interestingly, Midttrafik’s reasoning for the change relates not to problems along the affected stretch, but to delays occurring in central Aarhus. Despite that, the proposed solution would mainly impact passengers further south. Midttrafik says the goal is to cut delays and better serve the largest passenger groups but admits that the feedback volume has made a clear impression.

Millions of passengers affected annually

Route 100 carried almost 2.2 million passengers in 2024. Adjusting a line that busy could therefore affect thousands of daily users. For some families living in western Odder, the modifications could even force a shift from buses to private cars. Several residents have shared that they chose to live in the area specifically because of convenient public transit, and that removing local stops would make sustainable commuting impossible.

Midttrafik reviewing all hearing responses

After the consultation period, Midttrafik will now go through every submission before finalizing its recommendation. Company officials said staff will summarize and weigh the arguments against the original proposal, after which a formal hearing note will be sent to the Central Denmark Region for the final decision.

The company maintains that the plan would improve reliability on public transport lines that experience delays. However, critics counter that removing local stops for minor time savings contradicts national goals of reducing car dependency in regional Denmark.

Political reaction strengthens opposition

The backlash has not been limited to local citizens. All political parties in the Odder municipal council have joined forces to submit a joint protest letter against the plan. Local politicians stress that maintaining the current connection to Odder West is crucial for attracting new residents and employees to the town. Closing stops could, they argue, weaken both recruitment potential and the appeal of the growing district.

Because of that, Midttrafik is treating the political feedback with particular attention. Officials acknowledge that collective input from an entire city council carries more weight than individual complaints. Whether those objections will lead to changes remains uncertain, but the company expects the new bus schedules to take effect on June 28, 2026, once the final review is completed.
