Putin Watches Helplessly as Allies Crumble Worldwide

Russian President Vladimir Putin appears increasingly powerless as his closest international allies fall one by one. The recent collapse of Iran’s leadership follows similar losses in Syria and Venezuela, exposing Russia’s diminished ability to project global power while locked in a costly war in Ukraine.

Putin’s Allies Collapse in Rapid Succession

The fall of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a joint US-Israeli strike marks the third time in just over a year that Putin has watched helplessly as a key ally was removed from power. Despite decades of strategic partnership between Moscow and Tehran, Russia offered no meaningful assistance when American and Israeli forces struck deep inside Iranian territory over the weekend.

From Syria to Venezuela to Iran

The pattern began in December 2024 when rebel forces ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, a longtime Russian client. In January this year, President Donald Trump ordered a military operation that removed Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro from power. Now Iran’s theocratic leadership has fallen, leaving Putin with few reliable partners outside his immediate sphere of influence.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrij Sybiha noted the trend sharply. Putin has lost three of his closest friends in little more than a year, Sybiha wrote, adding that Russia has not helped any of them. While Russia remains locked in its meaningless war against Ukraine, which it will never win and refuses to end, its global influence is falling dramatically.

Russia’s Strategic Isolation Deepens

The loss of Iran carries particular weight for Moscow. The two nations signed a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement just over a year ago, cementing decades of cooperation against shared adversaries in the West. Since autumn 2022, Iran has supplied Russia with Shahed attack drones used extensively in strikes on Ukraine. Russia later began producing these weapons domestically.

Iran also provided Russia with hundreds of ballistic surface-to-surface missiles, according to international reports. In return, Tehran received six military transport aircraft from Russia and Belarus, as well as numerous helicopters and armored personnel carriers. Those Russian-supplied vehicles were recently deployed against Iranian protesters challenging the regime.

Exposure of Russian Military Weakness

The successful American-Israeli operation against Iran demonstrated clear superiority over Russian air defense systems, raising questions about Moscow’s military capabilities beyond Ukraine’s borders.

Russian Defense Systems Proven Vulnerable

The weekend strikes effectively bypassed and destroyed the air defense systems Russia had provided to Iran. The operation showcased how Western forces can defeat Russian S-300 missile batteries and other defensive equipment that Moscow has marketed as cutting-edge technology. This public failure undermines Russia’s reputation as a reliable arms supplier and protector.

Poul Erik Skammelsen, TV 2’s former Moscow correspondent, said Putin is weakened. The war in Ukraine means he can no longer project his power globally as he could with Assad in Syria, for example. This shows that Russia’s allies can no longer count on protection if the United States attacks.

Ukraine War Drains Russian Resources

Russia’s inability to assist Iran or other falling allies stems directly from its commitment to the war in Ukraine. Four years of intense combat have depleted Russian military resources and forced Moscow to focus exclusively on its immediate neighborhood. Putin approved measures in late 2025 to conscript reservists for military training throughout 2026, a sign that voluntary recruitment has largely failed after years of heavy casualties.

The Kremlin signed a decree establishing year-round conscription rather than the traditional spring and autumn cycles. Russian lawmakers introduced legislation in February to punish draft evasion more severely. These steps indicate Moscow cannot sustain its current military operations without drawing more heavily on its population, yet Putin has avoided full mobilization due to the public backlash such a move would trigger.

Geopolitical Implications for Russia

The collapse of Putin’s alliance network creates both immediate and long-term challenges for Russian foreign policy.

Loss of Middle Eastern Influence

Iran served as Russia’s primary partner in the Middle East, providing access and influence across the region. If Iran’s theocratic government falls entirely and is replaced by a regime friendly to the United States and Israel, Russia will lose virtually all its Middle Eastern leverage. A new Iranian government would likely align with the powers that facilitated regime change, just as Syria’s new leadership has turned hostile toward Russia after Assad’s departure.

Allan Sørensen, Middle East correspondent for Kristeligt Dagblad, said Iran is another friend who has slipped away, leaving Russia even more isolated on the world stage. The American-Israeli attack was a pure demonstration of how to circumvent and destroy the air defense systems Russia delivered to Iran.

Undermining of Security Guarantees

Putin’s core promise to authoritarian partners worldwide has been that Moscow will protect allies against Western pressure. That guarantee now appears hollow. Assad, Maduro, and Khamenei all discovered that Russian support offers little real protection when Washington decides to act. This reality will make future partners hesitant to rely on Moscow.

Skammelsen noted that Putin gets one silver lining from the attacks on Iran and Venezuela. Now Putin can say that the Western world order with international law, which he opposes, is obviously also something the US and Israel oppose when they kill another country’s leader.

Russia’s Limited Response Options

Despite the strategic setbacks, Putin has few options for responding effectively to his allies’ defeats.

Domestic Messaging Emphasizes Unity

Putin signed a decree declaring 2026 the Year of National Unity, emphasizing cohesion against external enemies and focusing on technological advancement. This domestic framing attempts to rally Russian citizens around long-term national goals rather than acknowledging short-term foreign policy failures. The rhetoric blames NATO expansion and Ukrainian peace proposals for threatening Russian security.

In a December press conference, Putin expressed hope for a peaceful 2026 free of conflicts, a statement that now appears disconnected from the violent reality of regime changes affecting his allies. The disconnect between Putin’s optimistic messaging and actual events highlights the gap between Kremlin narratives and geopolitical facts.

Monroe Doctrine Parallel Offers Weak Justification

Skammelsen pointed out that Trump’s revival of the Monroe Doctrine, which treats North and South America as an exclusive US sphere of influence, provides Putin with a potential argument for claiming similar rights in Russia’s neighborhood. The Monroe Doctrine from 1823 roughly states that the Americas are an American sphere of interest where other powers should not interfere.

This parallel may help Putin argue domestically that geography should determine political alignment, justifying Russian claims over Ukraine and Georgia. However, this argument offers little practical benefit when Russia cannot actually protect allies outside its immediate borders.

Implications for Ukraine and European Security

Russia’s weakened global position may affect the trajectory of the war in Ukraine and broader European security dynamics.

Resource Constraints Force Hard Choices

Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi reported that Russia plans to draft over 400,000 people in 2026 to form at least 11 divisions. Moscow is also forcing mobilization in occupied areas of Donetsk and Luhansk. These numbers reveal the immense human cost of the war and suggest Russia’s recruitment pool is nearing exhaustion.

The strain on Russian military manpower limits Putin’s ability to simultaneously sustain operations in Ukraine and project power elsewhere. This constraint likely contributed to Russia’s failure to assist Iran. As casualties mount and economic pressures increase, Putin faces difficult decisions about whether to continue the war or seek a negotiated settlement.

Western Unity Gains Breathing Room

Russia’s evident weakness provides an opportunity for Western nations to maintain pressure through continued support for Ukraine. The demonstration that Russia cannot defend its allies may encourage other nations in Russia’s orbit to distance themselves from Moscow. Finland and Sweden’s successful NATO accessions occurred while Russia was distracted by Ukraine, and further expansion may become possible as Russian influence contracts.

However, the aggressive US actions against Venezuela and Iran also complicate the picture. Some nations may view American willingness to remove foreign leaders as equally threatening as Russian interference, potentially limiting Western diplomatic gains from Russia’s troubles.
