Mette Kierkgaard from the Moderates is stepping down as Minister for the Elderly due to her husband’s illness. Henrik Frandsen, the party’s current parliamentary group leader, will take over the position while Kierkgaard remains in Parliament until the next election.
Personal Reasons Behind the Resignation
Mette Kierkgaard announced her decision to leave the ministerial post through a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office. She also shared the news on her own social media and on the Moderates’ platforms.
Her husband Thomas has undergone extensive cancer treatment. While the treatment itself went well, he is now experiencing late effects that are only just beginning. Kierkgaard explained that her husband and their two sons, aged 17 and 19, increasingly need her at home in Ribe. For this reason, she decided not to run for reelection to Parliament and is therefore also stepping down as minister today.
Despite leaving the ministerial role, Kierkgaard will continue serving in Parliament until the election takes place. Her decision comes after nearly three years in government following her appointment in December 2022 when Socialdemokratiet, Venstre, and the Moderates formed a coalition.
From Civil Servant to Minister
At 53 years old, Mette Kierkgaard entered Parliament in 2022 without any previous political experience. She came from a career as a civil servant, most recently serving as head of family services in Viborg Municipality. When the Moderates stormed into Parliament with 16 seats that year, the relatively unknown politician was appointed as Minister for the Elderly.
Kierkgaard described herself as coming in from the street as both a member of Parliament and a minister, completely new to politics but with extensive experience from citizen-focused welfare services. Throughout her tenure, she was often described as anonymous and far from being a voter magnet. However, party leader Lars Løkke Rasmussen turned this into a positive attribute.
According to Løkke Rasmussen, Kierkgaard did not create noise or conflicts for their own sake. Instead, she brought people together where others divided them. He credited this approach as the reason why the government managed to pass the largest elderly care reform in a way that everyone could support.
A Modest Government Reshuffle
DR’s political analyst Rikke Gjøl Mansø characterized the government reshuffle as quite undramatic. There is no political scandal or controversy behind it, only a personal choice by Mette Kierkgaard. At the same time, this is an extremely small reshuffle, as small as it can possibly be. One out, one in, and from the same party.
The government coalition has experienced several ministerial changes since its formation in December 2022. The Moderates originally contributed five ministers out of 23, including Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen. The party has since lost several members through various departures, which has created some instability in the coalition.
This latest change maintains continuity within the Moderates’ representation in government. Henrik Frandsen’s appointment ensures that the party’s ministerial positions remain filled by experienced politicians who understand both the legislative process and the coalition’s objectives.
Henrik Frandsen Takes Over
Henrik Frandsen will replace Kierkgaard as Minister for the Elderly. As parliamentary group leader, he has been the party’s leader at Christiansborg while other prominent politicians in the party have served as ministers.
According to Rikke Gjøl Mansø, Frandsen was chosen because of his resume. The Moderates is a party of many untested politicians who were elected for the first time in 2022. However, unlike many of his party colleagues, Frandsen has extensive political experience.
Frandsen’s Political Background
Before joining the Moderates, Henrik Frandsen represented Venstre. From 2016 to 2021, he served as mayor of Tønder. This local government experience gives him practical knowledge of administrative challenges and municipal operations, which is particularly relevant for the elderly care portfolio.
His appointment represents a strategic choice by the Moderates to install someone with proven leadership abilities in a ministerial role that requires coordination between national policy and local implementation. Elderly care in Denmark relies heavily on municipal services, making Frandsen’s background as a former mayor potentially valuable.
The Moderates in Government
The Moderates entered government as part of the SVM coalition in December 2022. The coalition initially commanded 89 seats plus support from North Atlantic representatives, giving it a de facto majority. Since then, the coalition has faced challenges as several members have left, reducing the SVM parties to 85 seats.
Lars Løkke Rasmussen used Kierkgaard as an example of ordinary people that the Moderates wanted to bring into politics. He noted that it is not such a bad idea to get everyday experts into Christiansborg. According to him, Kierkgaard traveled from municipality to municipality, speaking with everyone to get all parties on board, and therefore her impact on Danish politics will remain after she returns to her beloved family in Ribe after the election.
The party positions itself as a centrist alternative in an increasingly polarized political landscape. Looking ahead to the next election, the Moderates have stated they will not enter a red government with Socialdemokratiet and Socialistisk Folkeparti. Instead, they aim to maintain their reform-oriented, centrist profile that can play a key role across political blocks.
Continuity Despite Change
While ministerial changes can signal instability, this transition appears designed to maintain continuity. Frandsen’s experience and his existing role as parliamentary group leader mean he is already deeply familiar with the government’s priorities and legislative agenda. His transition into the ministerial role should be relatively smooth compared to appointing someone entirely new to both Parliament and government work.
For Kierkgaard, the decision reflects the reality that many politicians face when balancing public service with family responsibilities. Her willingness to prioritize her family during a difficult health situation demonstrates a personal choice that transcends political considerations.
The elderly care portfolio remains a significant responsibility within Danish government. With an aging population and ongoing debates about the quality and funding of elderly services, whoever holds this position faces substantial policy challenges. Frandsen inherits both the opportunities and pressures that come with overseeing reforms aimed at improving care for Denmark’s senior citizens.
