Elderly Denied Help Repeatedly in Danish Nursing Home

A nursing home in Faxe, Denmark faced severe criticism after an elderly resident repeatedly pressed their emergency call button but was denied help multiple times. An unannounced inspection by Elder Care Supervision East found alarmingly low quality standards at the facility, with only four out of 20 quality markers deemed satisfactory.

Serious Deficiencies Found at Søndervang Care Center

The problems at Plejecentret Søndervang came to light after Elder Care Supervision East conducted a two-day unannounced inspection in November. The facility operates as a self-governing institution with an operating agreement with Faxe Municipality.

During the inspection, supervisors interviewed multiple residents and their relatives, uncovering troubling patterns of care. Residents reported having little to no say in their daily routines, a fundamental right in Danish healthcare facilities.

Residents Denied Basic Autonomy

The inspection report included direct statements from residents that painted a concerning picture of daily life at the center. One resident explained they had no control over their bath schedule, which was fixed to Mondays regardless of preference. Another described being put to bed immediately after dinner with staff claiming it was “good for the body,” leaving them no choice in the matter.

Most disturbingly, one elderly person reported pressing the emergency call button to leave their room but receiving repeated denials from staff. This type of emergency call system is supposed to ensure residents receive prompt assistance when needed.

Widespread Quality Failures Identified

Elder Care Supervision East evaluated the facility using 20 different quality markers. Alarmingly, the center failed to meet 16 of these standards. The deficiencies spanned multiple critical areas including lack of continuity in care, insufficient knowledge and competencies among staff, and an inadequate pedagogical approach to resident care.

These findings represent a systemic failure rather than isolated incidents. The pattern of problems suggests deeper issues with staffing, training, and management at the facility. Without adequate staffing levels and proper training, care workers struggle to provide the quality of service residents deserve.

Official Response and Corrective Measures

Supervision Orders Mandatory Improvements

The severity of the findings prompted Elder Care Supervision East to issue a formal warning of an impending order. This means the facility must make significant improvements or face official sanctions. Politicians on Faxe Municipality’s Senior and Health Committee received notification of the situation and expressed concern about the conditions.

While committee members acknowledged the report, they promised to closely monitor developments at the care center. The facility will face continued scrutiny to ensure promised improvements actually materialize.

Center Director Responds to Criticism

Niclas Fuglø, the director of Plejecentret Søndervang, addressed the critical report but disputed some of its findings. He attempted to reassure families that their loved ones are well cared for despite the identified problems.

When pressed about how relatives could feel secure given the documented issues, Fuglø deflected somewhat. He suggested contacting Elder Care Supervision for their perspective but maintained the facility has had a positive working relationship with the oversight body.

Interestingly, Fuglø characterized the critical report and resulting intervention as an opportunity. Despite not being proud of the findings, he welcomed the upcoming educational program as a chance to improve care quality.

Planned Interventions and Support

Educational Program and External Consultants

As a result of the issued order, Elder Care Supervision East will conduct an educational program at the facility before summer vacation. This learning initiative aims to address the identified deficiencies in care practices and staff competencies.

Additionally, the care center has engaged an external wellness consultant to help improve conditions for both residents and staff. Creating a better work environment often translates to better care for residents, as satisfied employees typically provide higher quality service.

Healthcare Reform Implementation Support

Looking ahead to May, two nurses will join the facility specifically to help implement Denmark’s new healthcare reform. This additional support should help the center meet updated standards and integrate best practices into their daily operations.

The combination of supervision, education, external consulting, and implementation support represents a comprehensive approach to addressing the documented problems. However, success depends on genuine commitment from management and adequate resources to sustain improvements long term.

Broader Context of Elder Care Challenges

The situation at Søndervang reflects wider challenges facing elder care across Denmark. Staff shortages, low wages, and high turnover create conditions where quality suffers. Care workers often face impossible workloads, making it difficult to provide the attentive, dignified care residents need and deserve.

Economic pressures compound these problems. Rising living costs hit lower-wage care workers particularly hard, making it difficult to attract and retain qualified staff. Some municipalities have raised wages to address retention issues, but disparities between regions continue to create staffing challenges.

Meanwhile, Denmark’s aging population increases demand for elder care services. Without sufficient investment in staffing, training, and facilities, more care centers may struggle to meet quality standards. The problems at Søndervang serve as a warning about what can happen when resources fail to match needs.

For residents and their families, incidents like denied emergency calls represent more than administrative failures. They reflect fundamental questions about dignity, safety, and the quality of care provided to society’s most vulnerable members during their final years.
