Denmark to Give Up to 5,000 Kroner in Food Relief

The Danish government is close to finalizing a deal to provide food assistance to thousands of Danes struggling with high food prices. The one-time, tax-free payment will total 4.5 billion kroner and could reach recipients’ bank accounts before summer vacation, with different groups receiving between 1,000 and 5,000 kroner.

Food Assistance Check Coming to Danish Households

The Danish government is nearing a political agreement on a food assistance check designed to help citizens cope with elevated food prices. According to sources, the food check is expected to be announced on Tuesday as part of a broader effort to provide economic relief to vulnerable groups.

In total, 4.5 billion kroner will be allocated to the program. The payment will be a tax-free, one-time disbursement in 2026. Officials hope to deposit the funds into recipients’ accounts before the summer holiday period.

Four Different Groups Will Receive Varying Amounts

The draft agreement divides recipients into four distinct categories, each receiving different payment amounts based on their financial situation and household composition.

Retirees

Pensioners with liquid assets under 350,000 kroner will receive 2,500 kroner. Liquid assets include cash in bank accounts and securities such as stocks.

Families with Children

Families with children will receive 5,000 kroner if both parents earn less than 500,000 kroner in personal income. If one parent earns more than 500,000 kroner and the other earns less, the family will receive 2,500 kroner instead.

Welfare Recipients

People receiving transfer income, such as social assistance or disability pension, will get 2,500 kroner. This category encompasses those who depend on government support for their primary income.

Students

Students living away from home and receiving SU (state educational support) will receive 1,000 kroner. This represents the smallest payment amount in the assistance program.

Notably, individuals who fall into multiple categories will only receive the check once. For example, someone receiving disability pension who also has children would receive the payment as a family with children, not both benefits.

Political Negotiations Continue

The ruling SVM government continues negotiations with several parties including the Socialist People’s Party, the Red-Green Alliance, the Conservatives, the Denmark Democrats, and the Alternative. Meanwhile, Liberal Alliance, the Danish People’s Party, and the Social Liberals have withdrawn from discussions.

As negotiations conclude, additional parties may drop out before the final agreement is signed. This political maneuvering reflects the complexity of building consensus on economic assistance programs.

Food VAT Reduction on the Table

Alongside the food check agreement, lawmakers are preparing a separate deal to allocate funds toward reducing food VAT (value-added tax). This parallel approach allows parties opposed to the direct payment check to participate in broader food affordability measures.

Around five billion kroner has been earmarked for lower food VAT. However, the specific implementation remains undecided. Parties disagree internally and across coalition lines about whether to eliminate VAT entirely on fruits and vegetables or reduce VAT on all food items generally.

Election Campaign Issue

Because of these disagreements, the VAT question will become a campaign issue in the upcoming election. For now, a working group will analyze different models and present their findings to lawmakers.

Even with political agreement, technical limitations mean any VAT changes cannot be implemented for at least a couple of years. The complexity of adjusting VAT systems across retail and supply chains requires substantial preparation time.

Conditions for Support

Parties willing to support the VAT reduction agreement but not the direct payment check must meet one condition. They must commit to voting in favor of fast-tracking the food check legislation through Parliament.

This requirement ensures the assistance can reach recipients quickly despite political divisions. Without expedited processing, bureaucratic procedures could delay payments well beyond the intended summer timeline.

The food assistance package represents a significant government intervention in response to economic pressures on Danish households. As food prices have strained household budgets across income levels, policymakers face pressure to provide tangible relief while managing competing priorities and limited fiscal resources.
