Denmark No Longer Fully Trusts U.S. Protection

For the first time, the United States is mentioned negatively in Denmark’s new national threat assessment. The report highlights uncertainty over America’s role as Europe’s main security guarantor, showing a shift in geopolitical confidence within Danish defense circles.

Uncertainty About the United States’ Role

The Danish Defense Intelligence Service (FE) has released its latest annual threat assessment, known as “Udsyn.” The report lists the United States for the first time as a negative factor in Denmark’s security landscape.

According to the assessment, Washington now uses its economic and technological power as a political tool, even toward allies and partners. This statement marks a rare acknowledgment of potential strategic tensions between Copenhagen’s most important ally and Europe at large.

Earlier this year, Denmark’s prime minister reaffirmed that the US remains Denmark’s closest ally. That remark came after the American president once again expressed interest in acquiring Greenland, triggering diplomatic friction.

European Allies Under Pressure

FE’s latest findings suggest that the growing unpredictability of US foreign policy has created a wider debate within NATO. The agency’s analysts warn that the uncertainty surrounding America’s future commitment to Europe’s defense may embolden Russia to increase hybrid and cyber operations against members of the alliance.

Because of that, FE stresses the need for Europe to boost coordination, defense spending, and deterrence efforts. It underlines the broader European realization that the continent can no longer rely solely on US military guarantees.

Interestingly, the report also ties this shift to larger global power struggles involving Russia and China, adding complexity to how Denmark and its allies approach collective security.

Russia Remains the Most Immediate Threat

Despite the new inclusion of the United States in the threat overview, Russia continues to represent the primary military challenge facing Denmark and NATO. FE’s report states that the Russian threat will keep growing in the next few years, particularly if the war in Ukraine ends in a stalemate or freezes into a long-term conflict.

The agency estimates that if NATO does not continue to strengthen its defenses, Russia could rebuild its capabilities and be ready for a large-scale conflict in Europe within roughly five years.

Even so, FE currently does not see a direct threat of a conventional attack on Danish territory. The focus remains on cyberwarfare, disinformation, and pressure on Europe’s borders.

At the same time, Denmark is expected to play a stronger role in NATO’s northern defenses, closely tied to geopolitical dynamics in the Arctic and the ongoing debate about Greenland’s strategic importance.

Call for Stronger Defense Cooperation

Given this evolving landscape, Danish authorities emphasize the need for continued modernization and expansion of military capabilities. Experts point to this as a critical moment to rethink alliances and strengthen European deterrence strategies.

That includes a deeper look into why Denmark’s defense strategy must evolve quickly. The combination of rising tensions in Russia, an uncertain United States posture, and the rapid pace of global military technology have created new dimensions of vulnerability across the continent.

Without a doubt, this reflects a broader trend where smaller nations like Denmark must prepare for a more complex and less predictable security environment. Although the transatlantic relationship remains strong, the tone of FE’s analysis signals a realistic shift from blind trust toward strategic independence.
