Denmark Faces Christmas Shopping Frenzy This Weekend

Almost one in five Danes still have not finished their Christmas shopping, making the final weekend before Christmas one of the busiest of the year for stores across Denmark.

Danes Rush to Finish Christmas Shopping

If you are hoping to quietly pick up the last of your Christmas gifts this weekend, think again. According to a new survey by DI Handel, about 18 percent of Danes are waiting until the final weekend before Christmas to complete their shopping.

The study shows that streets and shopping centers are expected to be crowded with people still searching for presents. Many shoppers admit they are running late once again, struggling to find time between work and daily responsibilities. Some recognize this pattern as an annual tradition, where planning slips and presents are left until the last minute.

Popular Gift Choices and Last-Minute Pressure

Interestingly, one in three people who have not yet finished shopping also still do not know what to buy. The most common gift categories include shoes, clothing, and accessories, which together make up 28 percent of purchases. Personal care products follow at 22 percent, while toys and baby gear account for 18 percent.

For those still unsure what to purchase, browsing local shops in Copenhagen or looking for inspiration on what to buy in Copenhagen may help narrow down the options.

Meanwhile, 9 percent of Danes admit they often do not complete their shopping until December 23, the day before Christmas Eve. The analysis also suggests that men are generally slower than women at finishing their gift buying.

Black Friday’s Growing Role in Danish Gift Buying

The DI Handel analysis highlights another interesting change in shopping habits. Many Danes start their gift shopping during Black Friday. In fact, 55 percent of all Black Friday purchases were gifts intended for others. This trend signals that Black Friday and Christmas shopping have increasingly blended into one extended shopping season.

More women than men use the sales event to find presents. About 60 percent of women’s purchases during Black Friday are for others, compared to 50 percent among men. While some complete their shopping early through these discounts, many still head for store aisles in December to finish off forgotten items or find last-minute ideas.

Because of that, stores across Denmark, especially on shopping streets like Strøget in Copenhagen, are preparing for a weekend filled with long lines, crowded shops, and a lot of impatience.

Shopping Habits Reflect Danish Culture

In Denmark, buying gifts is not just about tradition but also about pacing. Many Danes prefer taking their time, thinking carefully about the right present for family or friends. On the other hand, busy schedules mean many simply postpone decisions until they cannot wait any longer.

The DI Handel report underlines how the mix of seasonal discounts, cultural habits, and work-life balance shapes when Danes finish their Christmas shopping. For stores, this final rush is both a challenge and a financial boost. For consumers, it is a yearly reminder that organization matters, even during a season meant for joy.

For those doing their holiday shopping from abroad or visiting the country, guides such as shopping in Denmark for foreigners can also provide valuable help on where to find gifts and how to navigate Danish stores during the hectic season.

Despite the stress, the tradition of last-minute shopping remains strong. Whether deliberate or not, the weekend before Christmas continues to be one of Denmark’s busiest and most spirited shopping moments.
