Deadly Tree Traps Set on Danish Roads

Police in East Jutland are investigating two suspicious tree felling incidents that occurred within hours of each other on rural roads near Rønde and Ryomgård. Both trees appear to have been deliberately cut to fall across the roadways, creating potentially deadly hazards for drivers and cyclists in pitch-black conditions.

Two Trees Felled Within Hours

East Jutland Police received the first report at 7:33 PM yesterday when a driver contacted authorities about a tree blocking Tjerrildvej near Ryomgård. Just over an hour and a half later, another call came in. This time, a large tree was lying across Trekronervej near Rønde.

A fallen tree on a dark country road can quickly turn fatal. That’s why East Jutland Police are taking this case extremely seriously as they investigate what appears to be deliberate tree felling designed to create obstacles for unsuspecting motorists.

Evidence Points to Deliberate Sabotage

Investigators examined both locations thoroughly, first during the evening hours and again the following day. Their findings suggest the trees were cut in a manner specifically intended to make them fall across the road.

Vice Police Inspector Thomas Schouby from East Jutland Police explained that the investigation is being handled with utmost seriousness. The two incidents occurred close together both geographically and temporally, leading police to examine whether there might be a connection between them.

According to Schouby, evidence at the scenes indicates the trees were felled in a way designed to make them fall onto the roadway. However, he stressed it’s too early to draw final conclusions. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported in connection with either incident.

Extremely Dangerous Behavior

Police are not hiding their concern about this type of action. Schouby characterized it as an expression of extremely dangerous behavior when someone does something like this and leaves obstacles across traffic lanes.

The vice police inspector urged everyone to refrain from such actions and to contact police immediately if they observe anything similar. Denmark’s rural roads see heavy cycling traffic, making such incidents particularly hazardous. In 2018 alone, police and hospitals recorded 16,441 bicycle-related traffic injuries nationwide, with 56% involving men.

Deadly Precedent in Similar Case

This isn’t the first time trees have been deliberately felled onto Danish roads. In the most widely publicized case from Sorø, a 55-year-old driver was killed when a tree fell onto his car. Six young men were found guilty of negligent manslaughter in that case. Three others received suspended prison sentences.

The Sorø case demonstrates the potentially fatal consequences of this type of sabotage. When a massive tree blocks a dark country road, drivers have virtually no time to react. For cyclists, the danger is even greater since they have less protection and are more vulnerable to impact.

Roadside incidents of various types have been increasing concerns for Danish authorities, particularly those involving deliberate interference with traffic safety.

Technical Evidence Being Examined

At the Tjerrildvej location, police photographed the stump of the felled tree. Investigators suspect it was cut through with a chainsaw. The stump shows clear evidence of deliberate sawing rather than natural breakage or storm damage.

Technical evidence from both crime scenes is being thoroughly analyzed. However, police emphasize that citizens’ eyes and ears could prove decisive in solving the case. As a result, East Jutland Police are now appealing for witnesses who were present at either location yesterday evening.

Witnesses Could Be Key to Investigation

Schouby stressed that information about who was present and what happened could be crucial to the ongoing investigation. Police hope that citizens who were in the area or who have heard about anyone who might have felled the trees will come forward.

The proximity of the two incidents, both in time and location, suggests a possible pattern. Investigators are examining whether the same person or group might be responsible for both fellings.

Broader Context of Road Safety

While this case appears to involve deliberate sabotage, tree-related road hazards are not uncommon in Denmark. Urban and roadside tree management failures contribute to various hazards, as many trees suffer from neglect, disease, or improper pruning.

Danish cities lack sufficient large, mature trees, and new plantings often fail due to poor rooting, compacted soil, and diseases like ash dieback. Excessive or improper pruning can destabilize trees as severely as complete felling, according to experts.

Some municipalities have implemented GIS systems to track thousands of street trees, optimizing routing and strategic replanting by species and age. Despite these efforts, person-dependent methods in the past led to high mortality rates from poor watering and improper tree care.

Public Safety Remains Priority

For now, police continue to investigate the two suspicious incidents near Rønde and Ryomgård. The technical analysis of the crime scenes combined with witness testimony will hopefully lead to identifying those responsible.

The incidents serve as a stark reminder of how vulnerable road users are to deliberate sabotage. Whether traveling by car, bicycle, or motorcycle, encountering a large tree blocking a dark country road leaves little time for evasive action.

Anyone with information about the incidents is urged to contact East Jutland Police immediately. Even small details that might seem insignificant could prove valuable to the investigation. Naturally, the police take all tips seriously and follow up on every lead that could help solve the case and prevent similar incidents in the future.
