Danish Rocker Blasts Trump in Protest Song

Danish musician and former Dúné frontman Mattias Kolstrup has written a protest song directed at President Donald Trump, urging him to stay away from Greenland. The song, titled “An Open Letter from Denmark to President Trump,” was written in just 10 minutes and aims to reach Trump’s supporters with a country-style sound.

A Personal Response to Trump’s Greenland Claims

Mattias Kolstrup, the former lead singer of Danish rock group Dúné, has released a musical protest against President Trump’s repeated statements about acquiring Greenland. The song carries a clear message: the U.S. president should keep his hands off the island.

According to Kolstrup, the song emerged from feelings of frustration and helplessness regarding Trump’s ongoing rhetoric about taking over Greenland. He describes his motivation simply, saying he was tired of the situation and wanted to respond provocatively to what he sees as provocative behavior.

Deep Ties to Greenland

The protest song stems from more than just political disagreement. Kolstrup has deep personal connections to Greenland that make Trump’s statements hit particularly close to home.

His parents and grandparents lived in Greenland, and he grew up hearing stories about the island. For Kolstrup, Trump’s talk of annexing Greenland feels like an attack on something deeply personal and familiar. He wrote the song out of sympathy for Greenlandic people and their right to self-determination.

A Trojan Horse for MAGA Supporters

Interestingly, the musician deliberately chose a country music style for his protest song. His strategy was to create what he calls a “Trojan horse” that could penetrate into Trump’s base of supporters.

By giving the song a country sound, Kolstrup hopes it might reach at least one American living in what he describes as the “Fox News universe.” The goal is not just to preach to the choir of like-minded Europeans, but to make Trump supporters think twice about their president’s Greenland ambitions.

International Reaction

The protest song has already crossed Denmark’s borders and generated responses from multiple countries. Kolstrup reports receiving positive feedback from people in Norway, Sweden, and Scotland. However, the reaction has not been universally positive.

Some angry Americans have also sent messages to the musician. Surprisingly, Kolstrup views this negative feedback as a good sign. To him, angry responses from Americans indicate that the song is actually reaching the audience he intended and touching a nerve.

An Unusually Quick Creative Process

While Kolstrup has written political lyrics before, this particular song came together remarkably fast. The entire composition took only 10 minutes from start to finish.

He was simply playing his guitar when the opening line came to him. Once he decided to frame it as an open letter to Trump, the rest of the lyrics flowed out naturally. The musician admits he doesn’t really know where the inspiration came from, but it happened quickly and organically.

More Protest Songs on the Horizon

This may not be the last political song from Mattias Kolstrup. He reveals that he has already written a few other protest songs, though they are not yet finished and he’s unsure where they will end up.

Despite his willingness to speak out politically, Kolstrup emphasizes that he would rather focus on traditional pop music. He prefers standing on big stages singing about unrequited love rather than dealing with political controversies. However, he finds himself unable to stay silent in the face of current events.

Trump’s Continued Interest in Greenland

President Trump has made numerous statements expressing interest in the United States acquiring Greenland. These remarks have caused significant tension between the U.S. and Denmark, which maintains sovereignty over Greenland as part of the Kingdom of Denmark, though Greenland has extensive self-governance.

The president’s statements have been met with rejection from both Danish and Greenlandic officials. Nevertheless, Trump has continued to publicly discuss the possibility, leading to responses like Kolstrup’s musical protest.

The Power of Music as Protest

Kolstrup’s song represents a long tradition of musicians using their art to comment on political events. By choosing music as his medium, he joins countless artists who have used song to express dissent and advocate for causes they believe in.

At the same time, his approach shows creativity in trying to reach across political divides. Rather than simply writing a song that would appeal only to those who already agree with him, he deliberately crafted something that might appeal to Trump supporters on musical grounds, potentially opening them up to his message.

Whether the song will have any real political impact remains to be seen. Nevertheless, it demonstrates how Trump’s Greenland rhetoric continues to generate strong reactions in Denmark and beyond.
