Two years after King Frederik ascended the Danish throne, a new survey shows that public support for the monarchy remains exceptionally strong across the country.
Widespread Trust in the Monarchy
Nearly two years into King Frederik’s reign, a new Epinion poll for DR reveals that 72 percent of Danes continue to support the monarchy, while only 15 percent would prefer to abolish it. Support for both King Frederik and Queen Mary remains very high, as does affection for Queen Margrethe, who stepped down in 2024.
Interestingly, experts note that this stable popularity highlights the resilience of the institution itself. The Danish monarchy appears to have maintained a special bond with citizens through stable leadership and grace under change. The consistency in approval ratings since the transition also shows that Danes have embraced the new generation of royals without hesitation.
Stability Compared to Other European Monarchies
Unlike many royal families across Europe, the Danish royal family has avoided major scandals or crises. While royal households in Norway and the United Kingdom have faced controversies and health challenges, Denmark’s royals have maintained a strong public image.
Because of that, the Danish royal house finds itself in a unique position of strength. Surveys suggest that Danes view their monarchy not just as a symbol of tradition but also as a unifying force in modern society. For comparison, Norway’s royal family has grappled with legal trouble surrounding Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s son, Marius Borg Høiby, and public debates over Princess Märtha-Louise’s marriage to an American shaman. In Britain, health issues affecting King Charles and Princess Catherine, along with Prince Andrew’s past scandals, have kept the monarchy under heavy scrutiny.
In contrast, Denmark’s royals continue to project calm and credibility. This clear conduct and ability to avoid controversy have preserved their popularity and strengthened the institution’s long-term standing.
Strong Support for the New Generation
The Epinion survey also marks the first time Princess Isabella was included in such research. At age 18, she already enjoys 72 percent positive ratings from the public, almost the same level as her older brother, Crown Prince Christian, who received 76 percent. Only a small portion of respondents expressed negative views toward the young royals.
Princess Isabella’s recent coming-of-age celebrations in Aarhus and Copenhagen drew attention across Denmark. Thousands of guests, including young people from all parts of the kingdom, attended events in her honor, highlighting her growing role within the royal family.
Renewed Respect for Prince Joachim
The public’s view of Prince Joachim has improved in recent years. Previously among the least popular royal figures, he now appears to have regained sympathy thanks to his visible and meaningful professional role. Since 2023, he has served as Denmark’s defense industry attaché and deputy defense attaché at the Danish Embassy in Washington, D.C. His term has since been extended until 2027, signaling confidence in his contribution.
Observers note that the family’s earlier dispute regarding the loss of royal titles for Joachim’s children seems largely forgotten. As a result, the royal family is once again seen as united, which further boosts their overall reputation at home and abroad.
While the older generation anchors the monarchy in history, the younger members bring fresh engagement and a sense of modern relevance to public life. Together, they form a balanced picture of continuity and adaptation that keeps Danish citizens supportive of the crown.
A Lasting Symbol of National Unity
In the end, this year’s findings confirm what many Danes already feel: their monarchy continues to represent stability and shared identity. Avoiding scandal while adapting to change has proven to be a winning formula. The royal family’s ability to remain close to the public, while staying above everyday politics, secures a level of trust that few institutions can match.
With King Frederik set to mark his second anniversary on the throne, Denmark’s royal household continues to reflect a blend of deep tradition and modern relevance. That balance keeps the royal institution deeply rooted in Danish life and ensures the monarchy’s lasting place in the national story.
