Criminal Blast Tears Through Apartment Block in Odense

A massive explosion tore through an apartment building in Odense, Denmark early Saturday morning, blowing out windows across multiple floors and igniting a fire that required extensive emergency response. Police are treating the incident as a criminal act, though no injuries have been reported. Between 20 and 40 residents were evacuated from the Korsløkkeparken housing complex.

Explosion Rocks Odense Neighborhood

The blast occurred at 2:29 a.m. on Korsløkkevej in Odense, sending shockwaves through the residential area. According to Funen Police, the explosion caused significant structural damage to the building located at the intersection of Nyborgvej and Korsløkkevej.

Windows were blown out on both the front and back sides of the building, affecting apartments on multiple floors. The force of the blast was so powerful that one window landed approximately 82 feet from the structure.

Fire Breaks Out After Blast

Following the explosion, fire broke out in a second-floor apartment. Emergency crews from Fire and Rescue initially extinguished the flames and left the scene, but were called back an hour later when the fire reignited in the same unit.

The explosion damaged at least four apartments, with windows shattered on units located on either side of a stairwell on the first and second floors. Structural damage extended to the masonry of at least one apartment. The building itself measures between 50 and 65 feet wide.

Massive Emergency Response

Emergency services responded in force to the incident. Police, firefighters, and ambulances converged on the scene. Later, military bomb disposal experts from the Defense Forces arrived to assess the situation, along with technicians from the Emergency Management Agency.

Authorities established a large perimeter around the affected building. Two residents approached police in their nightwear, hoping to access their apartments, but the building’s condition made entry unsafe.

No Injuries Reported

Despite the severity of the explosion, Funen Police confirmed that no one was injured in the incident. All residents from the affected stairwell were evacuated and have been rehoused.

Police repeatedly emphasized that there is no danger to other residents in the area, even as emergency personnel continue their investigation.

Investigation Underway

Former police inspector Jens Møller told TV 2 that this was an extremely violent explosion. He noted that the blast appears to have struck a second-floor apartment, with units both above and below suffering blown-out windows on both the front and rear of the building.

Investigators are pursuing multiple lines of inquiry. Technical teams are working to determine what exploded and whether additional explosives remain in the area. Meanwhile, detectives are trying to establish who lived in the targeted apartment and whether the explosion might have been intended to harm that person or conceal criminal activity.

Police Appeal for Witnesses

Funen Police have asked anyone who saw or heard anything related to the explosion to come forward. Authorities are particularly interested in obtaining video footage, photographs, or surveillance recordings from the area.

Police announced they would provide a brief update on the case at 10:30 a.m. at the police station in Odense.

Previous Incident Nearby

Interestingly, the explosion occurred just a few hundred yards from where someone attempted to detonate a dynamite bomb multiple times in December 2023. That case resulted in three people being charged.

The proximity of the two incidents raises questions about potential connections, though police have not yet commented on any possible links between the cases.

Community Impact

The explosion has understandably shaken the Korsløkkeparken community. Police acknowledged that the blast and the heavy emergency vehicle presence may feel unsettling to residents, but they continue to stress that there is no ongoing threat to public safety.

For those affected by the incident, police have directed residents to Victim Counseling services, which can provide support and guidance during this difficult time.

As the investigation continues, authorities remain on scene conducting their technical examination. The building’s stability is being assessed before forensic teams can safely enter to collect evidence. Police have indicated they will maintain a significant presence in the area for some time as they work to determine exactly what happened and who was responsible for this violent act.
