Christmas Eve Quiet, But Burglars Hit Before It

The number of home burglaries across Denmark dropped on Christmas Eve this year, yet overall, the holiday season has seen a sharp increase in break-ins compared with recent years.

Fewer Break-Ins on Christmas Eve, but More During December

Fewer Danes returned home to find broken locks on Christmas Eve this year. Across the country, police registered 44 burglary reports on December 24, down from 51 last year and 61 the year before that. While this drop might bring brief relief, the broader trend is quite different. From mid-December onward, there has been a noticeable surge in reported thefts targeting private homes.

According to data from the national police, the count of reported home burglaries between December 12 and Christmas Eve reached 729 cases, compared with 659 during the same period last year and just 530 three years ago. That amounts to an increase of nearly 38 percent over three holiday seasons.

Holiday Season Still a Prime Time for Thieves

Despite the drop on December 24, Danish police still warn homeowners to stay alert during Christmas and New Year celebrations. Many Danes travel or spend nights away, leaving their homes vulnerable to criminals who look for signs of empty houses. As recent figures show, this pattern continues despite repeated warnings.

Interestingly, authorities noted that burglaries occur less on Christmas Eve itself. Many people stay home that night, which likely discourages break-ins. But once the festivities spread across several days, incidents tend to rise again.

The timing aligns with reports of holiday thieves targeting Danish homes, particularly when families are away visiting relatives or vacationing abroad.

Why Danish Homes Are Still at Risk

For years, Danish police have outlined similar seasonal patterns. December always brings higher burglary rates than any other month. According to the latest bulletin, criminals often operate in groups, focusing on residential areas where neighbors are also traveling.

Certain regions around Copenhagen, Aarhus, and Odense consistently report more cases during holiday weeks. Police attribute this rise to organized burglary networks that can move quickly between locations and blend in with suburban traffic.

Many Danes have taken new security steps, including better lighting, alarms, and surveillance cameras. However, these measures have not completely slowed the upward trend.

Solutions and Preventive Steps

Experts recommend close cooperation between local communities. Neighbors who check on each other’s homes can deter thieves. Authorities also advise posting fewer travel plans online since burglars sometimes monitor social media to find empty homes.

Homeowners are encouraged to review their home insurance coverage to ensure protection in case of damage or theft. Many insurers require that homeowners properly secure windows and doors or risk lower compensation.

For police, the current upward curve signals renewed challenges ahead. Burglary prevention campaigns are expected to expand through the New Year, especially in neighborhoods where recurring cases occur.

A Continuing Trend to Watch

The coming weeks will reveal whether the trend continues into early January, as figures are updated through the start of the new year. Regardless of the final tally, authorities emphasize that only collective vigilance can limit further losses.

In contrast to previous years, this holiday season’s numbers suggest thieves remain adaptive, taking advantage of the smallest lapses in home security. While fewer Danes faced break-ins on Christmas Eve, the bigger picture remains troubling. For many households, this Christmas brought not just gifts and gatherings but also new reminders of vulnerability at a time meant for comfort.
