1,000 Volunteers Power Europe’s Biggest Handball Event

More than 1,000 volunteers are helping Denmark host the European Men’s Handball Championship, taking on everything from ticket control and crowd guidance to serving as team liaisons for visiting national squads. These volunteers experience the tournament atmosphere up close while handling crucial practical tasks that keep the event running smoothly.

Volunteers Keep Handball Championship Running

The European Men’s Handball Championship requires an army of volunteers to function properly. From checking tickets and showing spectators to their seats to guarding emergency exits and assisting with TV studio operations, these volunteers form the backbone of the tournament’s operations.

Even young volunteers under 14 years old contribute to the event. They serve as flag bearers and floor wipers, helping maintain the playing surface between matches.

Team Guides Provide Essential Support

Among the most demanding volunteer roles is that of team guide. These individuals stay with their assigned national team throughout the entire championship, handling every practical need that arises.

Line Schmidt volunteered as the team guide for North Macedonia’s handball squad. Her responsibilities begin the moment the team arrives at the airport and continue until they depart Denmark. She describes her role as taking care of all the practical matters that spectators never see but that make a significant difference for the teams.

Managing Daily Logistics

Schmidt’s duties cover a wide range of tasks. She coordinates meal times for the team, which proves more complex than it might sound. With four teams staying at the same hotel, scheduling must be carefully managed to prevent overcrowding in the dining area while ensuring the kitchen can accommodate everyone.

If meal times need to be adjusted for the team’s training or match schedule, Schmidt communicates these changes as early as possible. The coordination ensures all four teams can eat without overwhelming the hotel staff or facilities.

Medical and Transportation Coordination

Medical needs also fall under the team guide’s responsibilities. When a player or staff member requires medical attention, Schmidt arranges transportation with volunteer drivers. She coordinates trips to Aleris medical center or local doctors as needed.

Her commitment to the role extends to living alongside the team. Schmidt stays on the same hotel corridor as the North Macedonian squad, allowing her to respond quickly if any issues arise during the night. She also eats meals with the team, observing what they consume and helping them navigate unfamiliar Danish cuisine.

Cultural Exchange Through Food

The culinary aspect of team guidance provides some of the most memorable moments. Schmidt recalls serving tarteletter, a traditional Danish dish, to the North Macedonian players. Many had never encountered this combination of pastry shell and creamy filling before.

Some players initially separated the components, unsure how to eat the dish. After Schmidt explained they should eat them together, the team enjoyed the new experience. The hotel staff helps by placing small signs next to each dish indicating the protein source, whether fish, turkey, beef, or pork.

Players often smell unfamiliar dishes before trying them, a natural response when encountering new foods. These small cultural exchanges represent some of the rewarding aspects of volunteering at international sporting events.

Building Connections Across Cultures

The language barrier affects how closely team guides can connect with individual players. Schmidt notes that players comfortable with English tend to be more open and communicative, while those with limited English skills sometimes keep more distance.

Despite these challenges, most players now speak English well enough for meaningful interaction. Schmidt appreciates learning about different countries and cultures through her volunteer work. Some players become quite approachable and friendly, creating genuine connections during the tournament.

The Broader Volunteer Impact

The handball championship demonstrates how major sporting events depend on volunteer support. The more than 1,000 volunteers contributing to this tournament ensure that everything from fan experience to team logistics runs efficiently.

Their work allows players, coaches, and support staff to focus on competition while knowing their practical needs are handled. Meanwhile, volunteers gain unique access to an international sporting event and the opportunity to engage with people from around the world.

This model of volunteer involvement in Denmark reflects the country’s strong tradition of civic participation and community support for sporting events. The volunteers make it possible for Denmark to successfully host major tournaments that might otherwise require significantly larger paid staff.
