Copenhagen Plans Major Bike Bridge in New Urban Deal

The City of Copenhagen and the Danish government have come to an historic agreement on urban development and infrastructure, which will feature a significant new bicycle bridge aimed at improving connectivity in the city.

Historic Agreement on Urban Development

In March, the Municipality of Copenhagen and the Danish state reached a landmark agreement focusing on urban development and infrastructure. This deal marks a significant step forward for the city as it prepares for a sustainable future that accommodates a growing population and fosters green mobility.

New Bicycle Bridge Proposal

A key element of this agreement is a proposed new bicycle bridge, which the Copenhagen City Council will review in June. During these discussions, city officials will solidify plans for which type of bridge connection to pursue as they approach the 2026 budget negotiations. Among several options examined, the coalition supporting the agreement has prioritized a 460-meter-long low bridge from Langelinie to Refshaleøen, which will be able to open for large vessels, enhancing maritime access.

This bicycle bridge is not merely a transportation project; it plays a vital role in the overall vision of urban planning for the newly planned district of Lynetteholm, which is expected to accommodate around 80,000 residents and 45,000 workers when completed after 2070. The bridge is considered crucial in ensuring adequate cycling infrastructure to service this expanding community, reinforcing Copenhagen’s commitment to moving towards an environmentally friendly urban environment.

The estimated cost to construct the bicycle bridge is approximately 660 million Danish kroner, with an additional 430 million kroner expected for maintenance and staffing over the next century. To support the financing of this project, the City of Copenhagen can apply for co-funding from the state’s bicycle fund. The remaining financing will be determined during the 2026 budget negotiations. The completion of the new bridge is projected for no earlier than 2033, highlighting the time frame needed for such large-scale infrastructure projects.

Community and Political Perspectives

The proposed bicycle bridge has received enthusiastic support from various political leaders within the Municipality of Copenhagen. Mayor Lars Weiss emphasized the bridge’s importance in connecting the city for current residents and future generations. “This is not just a new bridge,” he stated. “It represents an investment in green mobility, daily life, and a more integrated city where there is space to live.”

Jakob Næsager, the Children and Youth Mayor, echoed similar sentiments, stating the Conservative Party’s ambition to ensure that residents can travel anywhere in the city in under thirty minutes. “Therefore, we cannot afford to miss out on providing shortcuts, including connections over the harbor,” he noted.

Connecting Copenhagen for the Future

The Employment and Integration Mayor, Jens-Kristian Lütken, highlighted the potential of the bridge to serve as an iconic landmark while becoming a vital hub for cyclists, maintaining the focus on sustainable and efficient transport. “Crossing the harbor in future Copenhagen on two wheels will be one of the easiest ways to navigate the city,” he remarked.

The forthcoming bicycle bridge represents a vital development in Copenhagen’s quest for sustainable urban infrastructure. By connecting key areas of the city through enhanced cycling routes, the project not only bolsters mobility but also aligns with Copenhagen’s broader goals of becoming a greener city. As discussions progress and financial commitments are secured, the bridge is set to pave the way for a more connected and environmentally-friendly Copenhagen, ultimately benefiting its current residents and future inhabitants alike.
