Members of Denmark’s Liberal Party are urging their leader, Troels Lund Poulsen, to declare himself a candidate for prime minister, arguing that hesitation could split the center-right bloc ahead of the next general election.
Venstre Members Push for Leadership Clarity
Across Denmark, local leaders from the Liberal Party, known as Venstre, are calling on party chairman Troels Lund Poulsen to step forward as the official challenger to Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. Many believe waiting any longer could harm Venstre’s momentum and confuse voters about the party’s direction.
A recent survey among local Venstre chairpersons shows a strong majority want Poulsen to announce his candidacy before the next parliamentary election. Out of those who responded, 85 expressed full or partial agreement that he should declare soon, while only eight disagreed.
According to several regional leaders, the timing could not be better. Polls indicate growing support for Venstre and for the broader center-right bloc, giving Poulsen a strong basis to lead an electoral challenge.
Polls Show a Turnaround for Venstre
For months, Venstre struggled after joining a coalition government with the Social Democrats and Moderates. Yet the party’s numbers are now improving. The latest Epinion polls show Venstre at 11.6 percent support, its best result since the 2022 parliamentary election. The surveys also suggest that the blue bloc, as Denmark’s right-leaning alliance is known, could potentially form a majority if the trend continues.
Many party members see the upswing as a mandate for Poulsen to step up. They argue that if Venstre wants to energize voters, he must clearly state his ambition to become prime minister. Otherwise, some fear the electorate might turn toward the Conservatives, the Liberal Alliance, or the Denmark Democrats—other parties competing for similar voters.
Poulsen Hesitates Despite Pressure
Even with mounting internal calls, Troels Lund Poulsen remains reluctant to declare himself as a candidate for Denmark’s highest office. He emphasizes that Venstre still lacks sufficient voter backing to justify such a move. In his view, the party needs to gain more ground before making personal political ambitions public.
Poulsen insists the issue is not about his confidence or abilities, but about timing and party strength. While acknowledging strong grassroots support, he believes Venstre should first solidify its political base before he presents himself as an alternative to Frederiksen.
Fears of Losing Voters to Rival Parties
Party insiders warn that if Poulsen continues to delay, Venstre risks repeating history. During the last election, its role in backing Mette Frederiksen’s government angered some conservatives within the base. Local chairpersons worry that without a strong and independent campaign message led by Poulsen, voters may again doubt whether Venstre can truly be trusted to govern separately from the Social Democrats.
Some local leaders believe hesitation could cause an exodus of supporters to rival blue parties. The concern is not only about ideology but clarity—voters want to know who will lead the bloc into the next election and with what vision.
Comparison to Past Blue Leadership Bids
There is also awareness of the risks that come with declaring too early. When Conservative leader Søren Pape ran as a prime ministerial candidate in 2022, his early announcement brought intense scrutiny and a disappointing election result. Poulsen’s allies recognize the danger but argue that his broader political experience and Venstre’s institutional legacy provide a firmer foundation this time.
At the same time, they say the longer he waits, the harder it becomes to present himself as a credible prime ministerial alternative. With the next general election due no later than October 31 of next year, pressure from Venstre’s rank and file will likely intensify in the months ahead.
Venstre’s Outlook Ahead of the Next Election
Despite internal tensions, Poulsen points to Venstre’s recent political victories as reasons for optimism. The party performed well in the 2024 European Parliament election and regained several key municipalities in local elections. Poulsen argues these results prove that the party remains the dominant force among Denmark’s center-right parties, regardless of whether he publicly claims the prime ministerial role yet.
Still, local leaders insist that the message must be clear. They believe that leadership visibility, not just policy consistency, will determine whether Venstre can unite Denmark’s right-leaning voters and offer a real alternative government.
In the end, Troels Lund Poulsen stands at a crossroads: either publicly commit to leading a blue government or risk leaving voters uncertain about Venstre’s true ambitions.
