A Danish family woke up to a surprise when their eight-meter-tall inflatable Santa Claus mysteriously disappeared overnight. After thinking it had been stolen, they later found it deflated in a nearby field.
A winter mystery in Skødstrup
Early Saturday morning in the small Danish town of Skødstrup, north of Aarhus, a family noticed something strange outside their window. The towering inflatable Santa that usually greeted visitors was gone. Only torn ropes and marks on the ground remained, showing where it had stood for years as part of their holiday display.
The family had installed the giant Santa as part of their seasonal decorations and to bring joy to locals visiting their property to buy Christmas trees. Since 2019, it had become a local trademark, brightening the area as part of the broader Danish traditions of celebrating Christmas.
Too big to just disappear
The inflatable Santa wasn’t an easy thing to move. It stood eight meters tall and weighed between 50 and 100 kilograms. Strong ropes anchored it to a fence, and the lighting system connected back to the family’s farmhouse. When the family inspected the area, the ropes appeared either cut or broken, and even the lighting cables and stakes had vanished.
Because of this, they quickly reported the incident to the police, suspecting theft. As the mother later explained, moving such a massive decoration required effort and equipment, so someone must have gone to great lengths—or so they thought.
A clue appears
A few hours after filing the report, the mystery took an unexpected turn. A nearby resident sent a message to the family through a local Facebook group, saying they had spotted a large red figure in a field between Skødstrup and Studstrup. Acting immediately, the family drove out to investigate.
Sure enough, lying across the field was their missing Santa. The air had gone out of it, and there was noticeable damage to the top of its hat. No one could tell whether the wind had torn it loose or if someone had intentionally freed it. The ropes were still frayed, and it looked as though it had simply toppled over before drifting away.
Relief and holiday spirit restored
Despite the damage, the family was relieved to have it back. Now they hope to repair the punctures and lighting system so the glowing Santa can once again stand tall and spread holiday cheer. After all, for many in the town, the red giant has become part of the warm spirit that defines Danish winter nights.
Their story reflects the devotion many Danes have to keeping the holiday season magical. Giant Santas, light shows, and festive gatherings remain a defining part of how communities across Denmark celebrate the dark months of December. Just as in many homes nationwide, local traditions keep the season bright—even when unexpected mysteries unfold.
Community reaction
Neighbors who had seen the display year after year expressed humor and relief online after hearing that the Santa was found. The family’s story quickly caught attention on local media, sparking conversations about how powerful winds and holiday pranksters sometimes bring surprise plots to Danish Christmas displays.
While the truth may remain unknown, one thing is clear: the big inflatable Santa will be part of Skødstrup’s Christmas story for years to come. With a few repairs, it will likely shine again by the time families gather for their seasonal celebrations, keeping alive the long-standing affection for Danish Christmas traditions.
